In Honghe, 218 kilometers away from Kunming, is Jiangshui, in terms of architecture and historical interest the most attractive municipality in the prefecture. It is a city that has retained extensive parts of its old town and historic buildings.
Jianshui’s most imposing building is the enormous, three-tiered Chaoyang Tower, formerly the eastern gateway to the city, with a long, high red wall at its base. Constructed in 1379, it is the grandest Ming-style gate extant in the province.
The Zhu Family Flower Garden is in the heart of the old town. It belong to a rich Han family, and now is a museum.
Some meters away is Confucious Temple, the most important of its kind in the province. It was built in 1325 (Yuan Dynasty).
Further south in Honghe is Yuanyang, one of the most colourful cities in Yunnan. Ethnic minorities, who make up the bulk of the people in town, and the rural scenery are Yuanyang’s attractions. The marvellous Ailaoshan Mountains, with their rice terraces, are just outside the narrow boundaries of the urban area.
