Wenshan, the capital city of Wenshan prefecture, is 372 kilometers southeast of Kunming. It is located in a vast basin, at a lower elevation than Yanshan, the next city north. Its downtown lies on the loop of land created by the sinuous course of the Panlong River as it makes its way through town.
Not far south of the city rises a steep set of mountains. The nearest of them, Xihuashan, is a park and its main feature is the three-story Xishan Temple, built in the Sanyuan Cave high up the vertical cliff-face of the mountain.
In the northwest of Quibei county, 400 kilometers from Kunming, is Puzhehei lake. Despite its rather remote location, it has become known as a landscaped vacation land at provincial level, thanks to the gumdrop hills that sit up a glass-flat plain. Local Yi row visitors in small boats on a leisurely cruise among the hills, passing villagers fishing in the shallow waters or gathering river plants.
