Zhaotong

Zhaotong city has kept a sizable part of its old town, comprising the northern and eastern quarters. The city lies on a high plain at just under 2000 meters. Though influenced by the rainier weather of Sichuan and Guizhou, the climate is mild, comparable to Kunming’s. The old town comprises wooden shop houses down narrow lanes, brick an tile private dwellings, and shops selling all kind of stuff.

In Zhaotong many Han old people dress in the traditional style – women in big turbans, side-fastened jackets and log aprons; men in ankle-length coats and with long beards on their chins.

Where the new city and the old town meet is Qingguanting Park. Inside is Qingguan Pavilion, built in 1809, the only historical structure in the city.

Ten kilometers north is Great Dragon Cave Temple, situated in Jiulongshan Mountains. It is a daoist temple, surrounded by a gorgeous scenery.
